New Orleans plumbers like National Economy Plumbers urge support for SWBNO’s Backflow Prevention Program, required by the state to protect public water from contamination.

-- Local New Orleans plumbing services companies - including National Economy Plumbers, a leading plumber business serving Kenner, Merrero, Terrytown and other areas of the city - have been actively stressing to their customers the importance of the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans’ Backflow Prevention Program, as mandated by the Louisiana Department of Health. The Department requires that all water systems develop and implement a backflow prevention program to protect the public water supply from potential contamination, with SWBNO responding out of an obligation to ensure compliance with these regulations to protect the city’s drinking water.
“Because National Economy is one of the leading backflow prevention services providers in the New Orleans area, we have been busy telling our clients about the benefits of backflow testing, backflow inspection, cross-connection control and preventer device inspection,” states National Economy’s David Howard. “We’re 100-percent committed to supporting the SWBNO’s Backflow Prevention Program based on the fact that the goal is to assist property owners with achieving compliance - and this is being accomplished through raising awareness and educating our customers about the benefits of the program and ensuring they understand the risks and consequences of not addressing any existing cross-connections.”

According to representatives of the Sewerage and Water Board, the Louisiana plumbing code requires all internal plumbing system hazards be protected, with the department currently enforcing compliance to safeguard against backflow to better protect the shared drinking water system. Common cross-connection points, the representatives say, include swimming pools, irrigation systems, fountains and fire sprinkler systems.
“As we have been stressing to customers, knowing how to prevent backflow is the first step in protecting themselves and their neighbors,” adds Howard. “With the most common form of cross-connections on residential properties being a submerged garden hose in non-drinkable water - such as in the context of a pool - the best way to avoid this type of cross-connection is by filling the ‘vessel’ through an air gap. This is defined as being the physical distance between the discharge of a garden hose and the receiving vessel.”
“Further, it must be understood that not all cross-connections can be eliminated, especially when it comes to commercial customers,” Howard continues. “Things that provide everyday benefits, such as car washes, fountain drink machines and lawn irrigation, can cause backflow without proper protection. Backflow preventers are mechanical devices installed within a customer’s plumbing system to prevent the reversal of flow, but what we often stress to customers is this: The type of backflow preventer required depends on the hazards and conditions encountered. Laws and regulations require at least annual testing of backflow preventers, and testing should be conducted by an individual certified to perform the work.”
